“I love wearing my sports jerseys to school! I love the competition and pride that lies along the professional sports teams rivalries at Bronx Science. Let’s go Giants!” Sameer Chowdhury 19’ said.

While Bronx Science students are invested in their classes and academics, they also sometimes have fun. As classes at Bronx Science are underway, games at Madison Square Garden have also begun. The National Hockey League (NHL), National Football League (NFL), and National Basketball Association (NBA) have all started and are into their first few weeks of actual competition. The fight for the Stanley Cup, the Super Bowl Championship, and the Basketball Championship have.

“After spending most of our time debating over sports teams and players, Alex, Owen, and I decided it would be a good idea to do something with our love for sports.”

Here at Bronx Science, there is a Sports Debate Club run by a number of students who are extremely interested in talking about and debating sports topics. The Sports Debate Club meets once a week to talk about current sports news and themes (and to eat pizza); controversial issues, certain players, teams are some of the ideas that are discussed . I stopped in for their first meeting to speak to the leaders and members of the club, and to participate in the debates.

“After spending most of our time debating over sports teams and players, Alex, Owen, and I decided it would be a good idea to do something with our love for sports. So, we started  Sports Debate Club. At first it was hard to get committed members, but now we are a large club that has a special bond over our love for sports. It is very interesting to see the many opinions and ideas from our diverse student body,” Zachary Siegelstein ’18 said.

One particular fan base that has an unexpectedly large presence at Bronx Science is that for the New England Patriots. There are a lot of students who are New England Patriots fans, and we asked them a few questions about how it feels to be the minority in sports at school, as well as how they became Patriots fans.

“Coming to school after winning the Superbowl last year was one of the best feelings. I knew that I had my group of Patriots fans that were just as excited as me, and for once, I knew that we could not be brought down by the majority of the school who root for New York sports teams,” Rachel Markowitz ‘18 said. This is just one of the one students who roots for a team that is less popular in the Bronx Science community.

Because of the constant talk and debate over which sports teams are better than others, we asked some students to give their insight into who they think is going to win it all for each main professional sport. Asking around the hallways of Bronx Science, some students had interesting input. “This is the year for the New Jersey Devils. They are going all the way and are going to win the Stanley Cup!” Ollie Katselnik 20’ said.
