A Glimpse Into the Science Laboratories at Bronx Science

Highlights of the Science and Engineering labs during the 2025-2026 academic year.

One of Bronx Science’s biggest perks is the opportunity it provides its students to access strong, well-equipped laboratories that make science feel tangible and real. Rather than learning physics, chemistry and biology concepts purely through lectures or textbook diagrams, students have the chance to practice science the way it’s meant to be practiced: by testing ideas, collecting data and observing scientific processes through hands-on experience! In the 2025-2026 school year, the science labs continue to function as the heart of scientific learning.

Bronx Science’s laboratory spaces support active learning in all sciences. Using the proper tools/materials, students can run experiments, observe what changes when they adjust variables and measure results accurately. If the lab procedure is unclear, students learn how to troubleshoot, adjust their methods, and repeat their work to get clearer results.

These science labs also foster an environment for collaboration. Students work in groups, share observations, talk through procedures and solve problems together. The science labs bring peers closer to one another, turning science into a collective effort. After all, real progress in a lab comes from both persistence and joint effort made by lab partners.

Tsering Lama is a Content and Proofreading editor for ‘The Science Survey.’ She enjoys journalistic writing because it introduces diverse perspectives and unique experiences for everyone to consider. Journalistic articles can be used to amplify the voices of groups that may often go unheard, working to prevent the dangers of a single story. Tsering values journalistic photography as it adds both dimension and depth to writing. The visual component of an article helps readers to mentally grasp the nature of a topic. In her free time, Tsering likes to visit cafes throughout New York City, read, and spend time with her friends and family. She plans to pursue biomedical engineering in college.

Sophia Birman, Staff Reporter

Sophia Birman is an Editor-in-Chief of ‘The Science Survey’. In addition to writing articles herself, she edits many of her peers’ pieces. She thoroughly enjoys the thought-provoking research and meaning behind journalistic writing that produces captivating stories. She believes that journalistic writing is key to spreading awareness, not only about monumental events, but also about seemingly insignificant stories that paint a bigger picture of society as a whole. Furthermore, Sophia is enthusiastic about photojournalism, believing that photos can truly make a piece of writing come to life. Outside of journalism, Sophia enjoys skiing, traveling, and debating. She also has a deep passion for learning about current events. She is ultimately fascinated by foreign policy and thus plans to study international relations in college.

Astrid Grimskog-Tran, Staff Reporter

Astrid Grimskog-Tran is an Editor-in-Chief and Graphic Designer for ‘The Observatory’ yearbook, as well as a Staff Reporter for ‘The Science Survey.’ In her work for ‘The Observatory,’ Astrid likes to take photos for school events and student life. She finds that the process of learning and experimenting to take good photos is fascinating and deeply enjoyable. When writing articles, she finds the detailed conversations in interviews to be eye opening, and enjoys when the discussion derails from the initial prompt. Outside of the yearbook, Astrid works as the Stage Manager for the Fall Play and Spring Musical, working with the many limbs of Stage Crew in order to bring the performance to life, transporting the audience to another time and place. Additionally, she loves playing the clarinet, an instrument that she picked up during the Coronavirus pandemic, and she hopes that everyone will appreciate the work that Concert Band and Orchestra, alongside the other performance classes, puts in, in order to prepare for their Winter and Spring concerts. While Astrid does not have a decided major in college, she is planning on continuing her pursuit of theater-tech, music, and journalism wherever she might end up.

Jiangzhuo Wu, Staff Reporter

Jiangzhuo Wu is a Managing Editor and Advisory Editor for ‘The Science Survey.’ Jiangzhuo enjoys journalistic writing as a way to share her thoughts on topics that she finds to be interesting and exciting. She loves the way that photography can capture moments so naturally and make you feel like you’re really there, reliving that moment of your life. Aside from journalism, Jiangzhuo enjoys listening to music, drawing, reading, and watching horror movies. She plans on studying political science or psychology in college and hopes to become a lawyer in the future.

Henry Li, Staff Reporter

Henry Li is the Assistant Student Director of Internet Technology, a Graphic Designer, and Section Editor for Academics with the Yearbook ‘Observatory.’ He is also a Staff Reporter for ‘The Science Survey’ newspaper. The documentary style of journalism in which history is recorded through an elaborate story fascinates Henry. He’s also fascinated by how the art of photography captures moments in history in a beautiful medium, building onto an already dynamic story. Outside of journalism, Henry enjoys robotics, making both traditional and digital art, and building simply anything that comes to his interest. Henry is very interested in anything STEAM-related, but in his spare time, he also enjoys exploring new hobbies and interests, such as content creation and writing fiction. In the future, Henry plans to pursue robotics and computer science, with interests in mechatronics.

Isla Mackarell, Staff Reporter

Isla MacKarell is a Copy Chief for ‘The Science Survey.’ She is drawn to journalism for it allows her to always dig for something deeper. Journalism creates an interesting and inspiring atmosphere for writers and readers alike to learn something new or surprising in an attractive way. Especially in the twenty-first century, journalism has taken on a new, stratified definition that doesn’t only include straight reporting, but explores other thought-provoking ways to convey a non-fiction topic or idea through detailed and creative use of language. Isla is also fascinated by the many types of journalism, especially how any topic that interests a writer can be materialized and published in order to spark possible new and exciting interest in a reader. When Isla is not spending her time writing for the ‘The Science Survey,’ deepening her photojournalism knowledge and skill, or participating in Bronx Science’s Mock Trial Team, she finds joy looking for adventures around New York City with her friends. Isla loves exploring and discovering new and captivating things about the city she grew up in. Although she has almost no idea on what her plans are for college and beyond, Isla knows that after her senior year at Bronx Science, she is curious about pursuing study in a literacy field.

Sasha White, Staff Reporter

Sasha White is an Editor-in-Chief for ‘The Science Survey,’ where she covers a wide range of topics – from Artificial Intelligence and psychological phenomena to spotlights of famous figures – in order to fully understand the world around her, whether it’s through learning large or small details. To her, articles are a form of exposure to people’s stories and experiences, and each piece published is an opportunity to see the world through a new and unique lens. That lens tells the story not only of the main subject of the piece, but also of the writer, their research, and their connection to the topic. She finds journalistic photography to be an essential extension to articles, conveying a story through composition and captured emotions that words themselves can’t quite express. Beyond journalistic interests, Sasha loves to spend time with friends, learn new crafts, and kickbox! Sasha plans to pursue a career in business and entrepreneurship while continuing to write for her university paper. Above all, she will bring the values that journalism has instilled in her — passion, purpose, and connection — as guiding principles in her future endeavors.

Christina Kantlis, Staff Reporter

Christina Kantlis is a Copy Chief for The Science Survey. In addition to writing her own journalistic articles, Christina oversees the editing and writing of her colleagues’ articles, ensuring that they maintain high standards of quality journalism. Christina was drawn to journalism by her passion for storytelling and natural talent for writing. She also enjoys the photography aspect of journalism as well, which allows her to visually capture the stories that she tells. Throughout her life, Christina has embraced writing as a means to explore different perspectives and convey meaningful narratives. Beyond her journalistic work with The Science Survey, Christina is involved in biology research, S!NG, is a member of multiple sports teams and clubs, and president of her community’s nonprofit organization. In college, Christina plans to study English as well as Biology, while continuing to pursue her passion for journalism.

Olivia Simon, Staff Reporter

Olivia Simon is a Chief Graphic Designer and Copy Chief for ‘The Observatory’ yearbook as well as a Staff Reporter for ‘The Science Survey’ newspaper. Olivia believes that journalistic writing is a way to connect with a variety of people, understanding and acknowledging their opinions. Additionally, she feels a personal connection to journalistic writing, as it can voice the author’s emotions, opinions, and more. Olivia has enjoyed photography for a very long time, and she truly thinks it unlocks a platform to convey deeper emotions and feelings that some aspects of writing cannot or portray differently. In her spare time, Olivia enjoys practicing tennis and basketball, as well as demonstrating her writing skills and techniques through crafting short stories. She also takes some time to do some personal reading, whether it’s browsing news articles online or simply finding an interesting book from the library. When she enters college, she plans on pursuing a career in the medical field, dedicating herself to discovering and providing treatments to illnesses, both simple and critical. This is her true passion, because helping and caring for others has always been her first priority in life. Olivia also thinks that journalism and photography will play a huge role in her future career, especially the medical field, as good writing and photography skills are essential to broadcast research findings and experiments.
