Bronx Science Girls’ and Boys’ Varsity Indoor Track Team: 2025 Bronx Borough Champions!

On February 9th, 2025, members of our Indoor Track Teams took to the track against all other high school teams in the Bronx. Here is a glance at that day and the students who participated!

As the starter gun goes off, Christos Batalias ’25 blasts off the block in a flash, racing the 50 meter dash.

Tucked in upper Manhattan, Bronx Science members of the Indoor Track Team commuted to the Armory Track after school–a time investment that proved itself by securing a Bronx Borough win for both the Girls’ Indoor Track Team and Boys’ Indoor Track Team!

The Girls’ Team won with 168 points, just nearly beating rival Dewitt Clinton. Although this capped the season off for many, others were able to qualify for the City Championship–a difficult mark to make. Furthermore, the girls qualified with a Sprint Medley Relay team to go to Nike Indoor Nationals–Zoe Levitt, Yuxin Waitkus-Tsang, Amanda Ro, and Mina Petrova. Alongside them was Mira Bieber in weight throw.

Simultaneously, the Boys’ team was hard at work to get a sweeping win of 178.5 points. Many members also qualified for the City Championship, and States. At Nike Indoor Nationals, many of the boys qualified. Matt Koffman, Christos Batalias, Nathan Zhu, and Frank Santoro raced the 4x200m. Christos Batalias also raced the 200m. In the 4x1600m was Liam Hernandez, Bansi Pande, Nick Anderson, and Alistar Blee. Ben Berman ran both the 1 mile and 2 mile race.

Winning the Borough Champs this year continued the team’s impressive several year streak–an effort only possible with the dedication and effort of the girls and boys on the Indoor Track Team.

Bea Sireci is a Spotlight Editor for ‘The Science Survey.’ She enjoys journalistic writing because it captures unseen aspects of familiar topics. Being a journalist allows Bea to meet new people and learn about their incredible lives and accomplishments. She loves photography for its ability to be interpreted in many different ways, so that everyone can develop their own perceptions. Out of school, Bea loves spending time going on adventures outdoors, such as backpacking. She enjoys being with friends and family, and spending time alone, where she loves sewing, knitting, cooking, and playing the tenor saxophone. In ten years, Bea sees herself in one too many places. Perhaps she will be living out west in the mountains, working as a traveling journalist, or even being an astronaut. For now, she is excited to keep exploring the world through the lens of a journalist.

Rossitsa Mina Petrova, Staff Reporter

Rossitsa Mina Petrova is an Editor-in-Chief for ‘The Science Survey,’ where she is responsible for revising and editing the articles of her peers. She enjoys representing her school and community through journalistic pieces that unveil hidden wonders often lost to the eye. For Mina, journalism is a way to educate, illuminate, and entertain. She loves capturing heartfelt and wondrous occasions in photography that are often lost when the moment passes. For Mina, journalism is about preservation and bringing to light stories that otherwise would have been kept hidden in the dark. She is invigorated every time she searches for an idea. She prefers the excitement of in-person interviews, carrying her notebook and pen everywhere she goes. She feels the necessity to always be prepared to document a story. Journalism never takes a day off, she likes to say. In her free time, Mina busies herself with extracurriculars at school and on her own time. She enjoys cross county, track, painting, and writing poetry. Mina loves journalism and plans of pursuing it in college and as a career. She wants to keep the magic of print newspapers alive and continue to represent small communities with journalistic writing that covers both domestic and international stories. Her main interests in her writing are about global warming and the environment. Her articles focus on both problems and solutions to the climate crisis on a small and large scale. Mina believes that journalism that educates and inspires positive change is vital for today’s fickle world.
