The background radiation left behind by quantum fluctuations from the primordial beginnings of the universe linger on to this day. From 1989 to 1993, NASA’s Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite observed the remnants of this fossil radiation over the whole celestial sphere.

A timeline of the expansion of the universe, beginning with the inflationary period that jump started the universe from a quantum speck to an expanse of emptiness a quarter-billion light years wide in a fraction of a second. To the right is the accelerating expansion of the cosmos, although neither time nor scale are preserved in this depiction.
