In a world where internet trends are overtaking holiday traditions, one community keeps the Halloween spirit hauntingly alive: the historic New York village of Tarrytown.
For the past twenty-three years, Tarrytown has hosted its boisterous and blood-curdling Halloween parade for thousands of visitors to enjoy. Organized by the town’s devoted Recreation Department, the festival has grown dramatically since it first came to be in 2002. Now, an estimated ten to fifteen thousand visitors flock to join the spooky glee each year, crowding the sidewalks of Patriots Park and Main Street to see their costumed counterparts take the Tarrytown streets by storm. On October 25th, 2025, fifteen hundred spectators – over 130% of Tarrytown’s total population – gathered in crowds stretching half a mile long for a night full of fun.
Every year, as visitors push past hordes of witches, monsters, skeletons, and ghosts to snag their spots at the front of the parade, they might be compelled to ask themselves a few questions. Particularly, what makes the Tarrytown parade as enchanting as it is, and how has the festival withstood the test of time to serve its attendees for multiple decades of haunting fun?
Parade Participants and Halloween Legends
As soon as the parade commences, the answer to these questions unfurls before the eyes of all attendees. Packs of trick-or-treaters glide in on spooky and breathtaking floats, families drive by in ornamented minivans, and eager participants of all ages scurry down the streets, tossing candy to excited onlookers. Children and adults alike wave eagerly to their favorite characters as they pass by, from DreamWorks’ Shrek to an excited bundle of Ghostbusters.

Undoubtedly, however, the most integral character to the parade is the one who kicks it off: the iconic Headless Horseman. The Headless Horseman is depicted as a man with no neck sprouting out of his shoulders. Donning a black cape and brandishing a jack-o’-lantern in one hand, he stampedes through the night on horseback. It is said that he was once a Hessian soldier who was decapitated by artillery fire amidst the Revolutionary War, and now lives in an unending, bitter pursuit of his missing head.
Many people have heard of the Headless Horseman through Tim Burton’s iconic horror film, Sleepy Hollow, set in Tarrytown’s neighboring village of the same name. This movie was based on Washington Irving’s 1820 novel, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which tells the tale of a raucous man by the name of Brom Bones. Bones assumes the identity of the Headless Horseman in order to scare the story’s protagonist, Ichabod Crane, away from wooing the daughter of a wealthy landowner. Regardless of the iteration of his character, his impact on the crowd is astounding; booming chants and screams erupt from hundreds of onlookers as he gallops by. Countless visitors cram their phones and cameras at his speedy form, hoping to capture a perfect shot to remember the night by.
However, the Headless Horseman’s charming canter is only a precursor to all of the fun yet to come. Live music blasts on each block, starting with various pop hits and leading into a stunning rendition of ‘Sweet Caroline’ by Neil Diamond that has become a staple of the event throughout the years. It’s the same scene every time the parade comes around: as the first few notes of ‘Sweet Caroline’ play, drumming up excitement, audience members listen with bated breath and excited smiles. As soon as the chorus hits, thousands of voices burst out in a melodic chant of “Sweet Caroline!” that booms across the village.
The parade has always represented a melting pot of different generations; this year, Sleepy Hollow Middle School’s marching band strode alongside a crowd of veterans, each performing a merry tune. Both groups have been a part of the parade since the start – the veteran band, for one, has been participating since 2002 and came back bursting with energy this year.

The True Enchantment Behind the Parade
Tarrytown’s talented performers are aided in purchasing their costumes and instruments by a wide variety of parade sponsors. These range from incredible local partners, such as a bar on Main Street named Set Back Inn, to major chains like Rivian Automotive. One of the highlights of the night is seeing the Make a Wish float, full of excited volunteers and children, roll down the street. Make a Wish is an organization that grants children with critical illnesses a chance to explore their dreams, from meeting their favorite celebrities to working their ideal jobs. Each partner works closely with the Recreation Department all throughout the year to get the festival off the ground.
In an interview with me, Karen Brown, the Mayor of Tarrytown, explained that the Recreation Department hosts meetings regarding parade preparations from January all the way up to October. “We really start preparing for next year’s parade on November 2nd,” she revealed.
And indeed, the true magic-workers behind the Halloween Parade are the volunteers that comprise the Recreation Department. They are residents of both Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow that work year-round to give visitors one haunting night each year. “Volunteers really step up and do the legwork,” explained Joanne Murray, co-chair of the parade committee, in another interview with me. “They work to get the bands and floats and sponsors.”
Dan Walczewski, Recreation Superintendent, explained that the details of the parade are carefully coordinated between Police, Fire, EMS, Public Works, and many others in order to keep the event running as safely and smoothly as possible. “It truly is a collaborative effort on everyone’s part,” Walczewski said, emphasizing how the parade has woven together a passionate community of both volunteers and villagers. “Together we have to figure out everything from traffic control, parking logistics, and emergency response all the way down to where the lighting needs to be set up.” Each little detail molds the night into a safer, more immersive experience for all to enjoy.
“We have municipal government funding,” Murray added, “making the parade a real private-public partnership.” Undoubtedly, the event crafts a symbiotic partnership between parade participants and local businesses in the area. Each year, restaurants and candy shops overflow with hundreds of customers looking to snag a delicious meal or candied confection before watching the organized chaos of the night unfold. Posh Pretzels, a local shop that sells delicious chocolate-coated pretzels, was one of many stores to decorate for Halloween this year. Baking up everything from red velvet to cotton candy pretzels, the shop has gone from serving local customers to preparing gift baskets for the Oscars in the past fifteen years alone.
Another must-see location when visiting the parade is an antique store named Pretty Funny Vintage. Operating inside of a gorgeous Victorian house, the local store also made its façade Halloween-ready with colorful flags for the fall season. Inside, merchandise featuring the silhouette of the Headless Horseman proves to be a hit amongst customers every year: “heads. will. roll.,” reads a popular T-shirt.
It’s Telltale What’s at the Heart of the Festivities
From the parade itself to the small businesses and shops offering a place to explore the village’s culture, there is no doubt that Tarrytown offers a mystifying experience for all Halloween lovers. It is a place for adults and children to be absorbed in the spooky thrill of the season, dress up as their favorite characters, and eat delicious treats.
And yet, what is truly at the heart of the festivities is the bonds that they create. “My favorite part of the parade,” said Walczewski, “and what I believe to be the biggest benefit to the Village, is being able to offer fun and create memories.”
For the Recreation Department and returning visitors alike, the festival is more than just an extravagant event or a way to show off Halloween spirit. It is also a common ground amongst Tarrytown locals and tourists from all corners of the United States, used to bring families and friends together and create a tradition that has surpassed everything from an increasingly digitized society to our current uncertain times.
The parade continues to be a staple of Westchester and a symbol of love for Halloween, music, food, tradition, and community. Walking away from the event, one will come to realize that it doesn’t matter where they are from, how old they are, or even who they are dressed as — the Tarrytown Halloween Parade is a night for them to let loose, watch the fun and submerge themselves in the spirit of both the season and the community behind it. The community’s consensus is clear: visit the parade once, and you’ll be back for years to come!
