Throughout history, humans have developed various forms of entertainment ranging from the creation of the arts to the invention of pastimes. One category that has endured the test of time is sports.
In modern times, fans can place bets on a favored winner in official matches, known as a moneyline. This is a popular type of sports wagering, although there are other variants such as totals, parlays, and several more. The term “sports” encompasses a wide variety of events, all of which bettors may submit their coin to. You can bet on more traditional sports such as association football, basketball, horse racing, and American football, or take your chance at cheese rolling, chess boxing, or a heated tournament of Rock-Paper-Scissors.
Gambling is a precarious choice for a hobby. This presents various ethical problems in numerous states and countries by allowing such practices to continue. In the United States of America, while thirty nine states offer sports betting activities, the remaining eleven states (Alabama, Alaska, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah) prohibit sports betting. The most common minimum age allowed in the United States is twenty-one years old, although certain states, such as Kentucky, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Wyoming, Oregon, and Washington D.C., allow citizens to start placing bets at eighteen years old.
The possibility of a life changing reward is tantalizing to a great percentage of the population. However, there is no end to addiction without taking the first step away from such a detrimental lifestyle. Sports betting and other kinds of gambling can cause substantial amounts of debt, or loss of savings. Delving into effects on an individual, there is often a great strain placed on the mental state when funds are not responsibly managed and allocated properly for daily needs. Victims can turn to unhealthy habits, may succumb to a negative cycle of gambling beyond any possibility of recovery, engage self-harm, and in the worst case, even suicide.
In a personal essay published in Maclean’s, one bettor shares his experience, “I’ve lied to family members, compromised marriages, missed mortgage payments, contemplated suicide, all because of my addiction. I’ve lost a hell of a lot more than money.”
The repercussions of falling into a gambling spiral can be greater than material items, such as currency, if the victim reaches beyond their financial capabilities. Debt is accumulated far quicker than many gamblers may realize, and participating in any related activities can hurt more than just a bank account. There are major mental health issues associated with sports betting and gambling in general, which can cause a person to become a hazard to themself and their acquaintances. Once gambling as a hobby turns into an addiction, the gambler would be afflicted with compulsive gambling. This is a mental disorder that stems from a constant agitation and thought process tracing back to gambling activities. If someone develops compulsive gambling, their brain becomes hardwired to focus almost entirely on betting news and to rely on gambling as a coping mechanism for everyday hardships. It is a harrowing cycle that is highly difficult to break for good.
Many professional athletes themselves have issues with sports betting. It is illegal for active athletes in the industry to bet on sporting events of their category, but they are allowed to stake currency on other types of sports. This fact has given rise to several cases of illegal gambling on the part of athletes engaging in underhanded deals, most through the use of private information about certain players to their advantage.
One point of contention in the college sports industry pertains to the regulation of sports betting for games at such a level. All athletes are not allowed to gamble on their sports’ matches, but all professional athletes (excluding those managed by the NCAA) are able to place bets on other sporting events. The popularity of college sports has risen immensely throughout recent years, in the men and women’s leagues. There have been massive viewership gains, with one such example being a record high of 30.1 million viewers for the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship on January 19th, 2026. With the public’s increasing attention placed on the argument over college matchups compared to professional leagues, and growing interest in college sports in general, new perspectives on allowing sports wagering in college sports have appeared.
As part of a major investigation conducted by the FBI during 2025, coach Chauncey Billups, former player Damon Jones and current player Terry Rozier were all arrested on October 23rd, 2025 due to allegedly taking part in an extensive scandal. With rigged sports betting and poker games, victims were cheated out of their money through manipulated circumstances and involved athletes raked in unearned money.
Another athlete whose career was derailed by gambling in recent years is Jontay Porter, a once promising high-school recruit. In 2024, the National Basketball Association announced that Porter had illegally placed thirteen bets for NBA games through an online gambling account under another person’s name. As of this time of writing, Porter is facing charges and a possible sentencing.
There was a recent proposal brought before the NCAA meant to take effect on November 1st, 2025, suggesting that college students be allowed to follow looser rules relating to sports betting. Restrictions related to college sports would stay in place, but students and staff would be able to bet on professional sports. This proposition was advocated for with the goals of recognizing the more widespread acceptance of sports betting in a majority of U.S. states, to keep with the shifting times. It also promoted the protection of integrity so that legality could improve the rates of illegal gambling activities. Banning certain practices have proved to be counterintuitive in history, as they often result in a lowered government regulation over such activities.
However, Division I (the most competitive) of the NCAA made a decision to hold a thirty-day voting window reconsidering the implementation of this proposal due to doubts surrounding the trustworthiness of athletes and other involved staff members. Several cases, some mentioned previously, including the illegal use of private information about players being used as tools to underhandedly win bets have sparked disagreements. Despite this momentary conflict among differing opinions on the subject, a majority of votes pointed towards the rescinding of the proposal-with a consensus reached rather quickly. It seems that it will be quite difficult for sports betting to evolve towards including college sports. However, this form of gambling continues to grow in other new ways.
With the success of a multitude of social media platforms and other technologies, online websites have emerged as viable alternatives to in-person betting. Sports fans no longer need to rely on cashiers, in-person kiosks and traveling to a specific sportsbook to cash in a win. Even with this new convenience, online gambling activity presents a new layer of issues for bettors. Especially with this new convenience, sports betting is more accessible than ever, enabling greater, widespread addiction.
Both methods of sports betting have a high chance of causing compulsive gambling and the rapid draining of savings. The favorable accessibility of online betting increases the chances of causing some degree of addiction to this type of gambling. An excessive amount of advertisements on such websites or apps promise large incentives, easily pulling new victims into a path of depreciating mental health. Certain services offered may even be illegal and put users’ bank account information at risk.
Overall, sports betting and gambling has a great yet mixed effect on a country’s economy. Impacts on the government are generally positive, including job creation as well as extreme increases in tax revenue, which is known as “windfall tax.” With a record high of approximately 100 billion dollars wagered in 2023 in the United States, the fiscal year yielded 1.8 billion dollars in sports betting tax revenue. Some major sports betting companies include Flutter Entertainment (FanDuel), DraftKings, bet365 and more. The sports betting industry has grown especially with its integration into all kinds of new technologies as time passes, with the involvement of artificial intelligence and mobile applications contributing to mainstream acceptance. Trends in market size point towards the milestone of approximately 33.2 billion USD to be attained in 2030.
Sports betting is an exciting form of gambling to participate in, as long as those who involve themselves in such activities are sufficiently prepared to handle their monetary business accordingly. As mature adults with the responsibilities of managing the money at their disposal, gamblers should understand what kind of risks they are taking in participating in some form of gambling, and how susceptible they are towards becoming addicted. With such severe consequences, sports betting cannot be taken lightly.
