‘Urinetown’ the Musical!

The annual Spring Musical, ‘Urinetown’ was a resounding success!

Bobby Strong (Elisa Oh ’26) listens to the heart of Hope Cladwell (Alianna Ribadeneira ’25) in the dead of night.

The stage lights turn on and an eager audience is greeted by Lockstock, a morally grey cop, explaining what the show will be about. People watch as the poor citizens of the town sluggishly form a line to get to use the public restroom. Viewers get to meet Bobby and Hope, two lovers who sadly, could never be and they gasped as Bobby was thrown from the top of a building. Claps could be heard when the poor rebelled against the tyrannical company called Urine Good Company (UGC for short), but the happiness suddenly ended when all of the citizens collapsed from the loss of water. This is Urinetown. Not the place of course, but the musical.

On Wednesday May 21, Thursday May 22, and Friday May 23, 2025, the students of the Bronx Science Drama Department brought this show to life. Despite its somewhat odd subject matter, Urinetown astounded students, teachers, family members, and other audience members. The amazing singing and acting talent, incredible sets, and choreographed dance numbers brought to life a heartfelt and emotional story characterized by rebellion, class oppression, and love.

She believes that photography helps to add imagery to articles, and makes the story a more fascinating read overall. In the future, Harper hopes to use her writing to shine a light on people and places that are often overlooked. Her favorite types of journalism articles to read are Editorials and Arts and Entertainment pieces. Outside of school, Harper enjoys listening to music and reading books, especially fantasy novels. She is still exploring her options of what she wants to study after high school, but she would like to continue with journalism in the future.

Bridget Galwey is an Editor-in-Chief and a Chief Graphic Designer for ‘The Observatory’ yearbook. She is also a Staff Reporter for ‘The Science Survey’ newspaper. Bridget has always loved reading and telling stories. She believes that journalism is a great way to inform people of ideas in a creative and compelling way. She has a passion for photography that tells a story. Bridget has a deep appreciation for the impact that photography has on the world of journalism. She loves the challenge of looking for a photo that will make a statement. Bridget loves to read dystopian fiction, taking walks in Central Park, and enjoys going to museums with her friends. Bridget would love to pursue graphic design in the future. She wants to go into the field of marketing and improve her photography skills.

Bea Sireci, Staff Reporter

Bea Sireci is a Spotlight Editor for ‘The Science Survey.’ She enjoys journalistic writing because it captures unseen aspects of familiar topics. Being a journalist allows Bea to meet new people and learn about their incredible lives and accomplishments. She loves photography for its ability to be interpreted in many different ways, so that everyone can develop their own perceptions. Out of school, Bea loves spending time going on adventures outdoors, such as backpacking. She enjoys being with friends and family, and spending time alone, where she loves sewing, knitting, cooking, and playing the tenor saxophone. In ten years, Bea sees herself in one too many places. Perhaps she will be living out west in the mountains, working as a traveling journalist, or even being an astronaut. For now, she is excited to keep exploring the world through the lens of a journalist.

Leah Jiang, Staff Reporter

Leah Jiang is a Groups Section Editor and a Graphic Designer for ‘The Observatory’ yearbook. She is also a Staff Reporter on ‘The Science Survey’. She finds journalistic writing to be helpful, as it not only educates and entertains people, but also tells a story through its writing and spreads awareness. She finds that photographs help a story’s writing, allowing readers to visualize scenes and allow emotions to be better conveyed through words. Outside of school, Leah likes to spend her free time playing video games, drawing, listening to music, and reading books. She plans on studying either electrical or biological engineering in college. But she hopes to be able to include her love of drawing and designing in her future career, no matter what it is.

Katherine Hong, Staff Reporter

Katherine Hong is a Chief Graphic Designer and Managing Editor for the ‘Observatory’ yearbook. She is also a Staff Reporter for ‘The Science Survey.’ Doing various arts and crafts has always been her favorite pastime throughout her life. Katherine has experimented with all kinds of crafts, ranging from sewing, to crocheting and making rainbow loom bracelets. Along with her interest in the arts, Katherine also pursues an interest in journalistic writing. She admires how journalists perfect the art of taking their findings and turning them into captivating stories for readers, enticing them to read more. She also has a passion for taking photographs that tell stories, since they immerse the viewers in the narrative and allow them to connect with the stories on a more personal level. Katherine plans on majoring in medicine in college, while keeping journalism and photography as recreational activities in the future.
