When most students hear the final bell ring, they think about what comes next – teacher office-hours, their after-school activity, or maybe going home. But for a few, on Thursdays and Tuesdays, they think about going to the third floor and hanging out with the animals of Bronx Science–an activity more eloquently called “Animal Squad.” Not only do these students socialize with the animals, but they also come twice a week to volunteer to clean out the cages and restock the food and water. With school funding, the leadership makes sure to keep a running supply of hay, food, pellets, and maintenance supplies. Although the squad has lost animals over the years (as animals have been less utilized in classes), these students have made sure that loneliness is the last thing these guinea pigs, chinchillas, and cockroaches feel.
As Maria Savin ‘26, a dedicated member of the squad, told me, “I joined Animal Squad because I have always loved animals. My parents have no idea where this love came from, since no one else in my family is crazy about them. Animal Squad helped me connect with animals in such a fun and interactive way, and it allowed me to truly express my interests! Now, after three years, I feel like I really formed a bond with these animals – especially the guinea pigs. It is so cool that Bronx Science offers such a unique opportunity that aligns with my passions!”
Any student is welcome…as long as they are willing to get their hands dirty!
