This year on May 30th and 31st, 2024, the Bronx Science Music Department presented its annual Spring Concert. With groups such as orchestra, chorus, jazz band, and concert band, there were a multitude of songs and talents showcased. The jazz band, directed by Mr. Juan Mantilla, started off strong with energetic melodies. They performed songs such as ‘Stablemates,’ ‘Mas que nada,’ ‘My Funny Valentine,’ ‘Yardbird Suite,’ and ‘Dance Big’un, Dance.’ The following group, chorus, directed by Mr. Paul DeSilva, performed ‘What A Wonderful World,’ ‘Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing,’ ‘Ticket To Ride,’ ‘The Ash Grove,’ and ‘Don’t Stop Me Now.’ The concert band displayed a magical performance featuring songs from Disney’s ‘Encanto,’ ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean,’ ‘Zip Line,’ and ‘Fate of The Gods.’ The concert ended off with a grand finale, featuring orchestra’s violinists, trombonists, clarinetists, oboists, trumpet, flute, and viola players.

Sofia Fernandez is a Managing Editor and Graphic Designer for ‘The Observatory’ yearbook. She is also a Staff Reporter for 'The Science Survey.' Sofia believes that journalistic writing allows us to take on new perspectives. She also finds journalistic writing to be interesting and informative because it educates the reader about what the journalist is trying to convey in their writing. Photography really speaks to her heart. She isn’t afraid to take new photos of things that she finds interesting and that’s what she loves about it. Photography allows us the opportunity to capture a moment and cherish it as time goes on. Whether it’s photography or journalism, both allow us to demonstrate our creativity. Outside of school, Sofia pursues a variety of hobbies. These include listening to music, playing sports such as soccer and badminton, drawing, taking photographs, reading, and watching shows/movies. One of her favorite movies is Coraline because it has a lot of interesting fan theories behind it and its level of suspense makes it appealing. Another movie she enjoyed watching was La La Land, because it is based in Los Angeles, California and that is where she wants to be to pursue her future career. In college, she plans on studying either film or criminology. A future career that interests her after college is being a film director. It is her dream career because she has always wanted to be in the film industry and feel the liveliness of being on a set.
Kate Hankin, Staff Reporter
Kate Hankin is an Editor-in-Chief for ‘The Science Survey.’ In her journalistic writing, Kate likes to share her interests such as food, music, current events, politics, and movies. She enjoys the journalistic process of researching for her articles as well as taking photos and interviewing Bronx Science students. Kate is also a Social Media Editor for ‘The Science Survey’ and a photographer for ‘The Observatory’ yearbook. In her free time, Kate loves to bake, read, listen to music, and go on long walks in the city. In the future, Kate hopes to study history and statistics in college and work on a college newspaper.
Kathryn Wu, Staff Reporter
Kathryn Wu is a Graphic Designer and Student Life Section Editor for ‘The Observatory’ yearbook. She is also a Staff Reporter for 'The Science Survey.' Kathryn finds journalistic writing to be very expressive and enjoys how she can learn a lot about many different types of people through each of their unique stories. In addition to writing, Kathryn finds journalistic photography to be an amazing medium that captures stories visually. Kathryn is known to be very artsy and creative to her friends. Outside of school, you can find her spending most of her free time watching K-dramas, learning K-pop choreography, and singing karaoke with friends. Kathryn’s plans for the future aren’t set in stone and she’s unsure of a specific career path. However, she would love to have a future career in an artistic field whether that is architecture, dance, or some sort of graphic design.

Bridget Galwey is an Athletics Editor and Graphic Designer for ‘The Observatory’ yearbook. She is also a Staff Reporter for 'The Science Survey.' She has always loved reading and telling stories. She believes that journalism is a great way to inform people of ideas in a creative and compelling way. She has a passion for photography that tells a story. Bridget has a deep appreciation for the impact that photography has on the world of journalism. She loves the challenge of looking for a photo that will make a statement. Bridget loves to read dystopian fiction, to take walks in Central Park, and she also enjoys going to museums with her friends. Bridget would love to pursue graphic design in the future. She wants to go into the field of marketing and improve her photography skills.
