Bomber jackets, plaid and jeans, block heeled boots, denim jackets, and over-sized hoodies mark the norms of fall fashion.

Students dress in anything ranging from clean and preppy outfits to match the fresh start of the school year to bold and daring outfits for those who like to express themselves a bit more.

“I really like fall trends, because you can wear a lot of layers, and you have so many options from which to choose. It’s not as suffocating as winter clothing, but you don’t have to worry about the heat, as with summer  clothing,” Nazifa Ali ‘17 said. “It’s like a cozy and comfortable in-between.”

Like Ali, many students like the fall simply because it is a buffer season. It is neither too hot nor too cold.

Dressed in vibrant hues of pink, Vivian Ciddector ‘17 particularly enjoys the fall season.

“My closet is full of colorful attires; dressing up in colors illustrates the optimistic and extroverted person that represents me,” Ciddector said. “I like walking through a hallway full of dark and plain colors knowing that I am part of that small statistic that deviates from the crowd.”

The semi-annual New York Fashion Week ended on September 14th, 2016, showcasing all of the brand new styles that high-end designers had to share with consumers. Among them was Anneisa Hasibuan, an Indonesian fashion designer who took a bold step in the fashion industry when she presented models all clad in hijabs. Hasibuan and her models received a standing ovation for their show.

“As a hijabi, fall is really my favorite season, because I can dress modestly in long sleeved sweaters and boots without sweating ten pounds,” said Nadia. “I think it’s a fun time to try out different types of modest fashion without worrying about being too hot or too cold.”

Meanwhile, the takeaway trendy item of the Fall 2016 Runway was velvet. Designers like Balmain, Stella McCartney, and Givenchy all flaunted their velvet designs on models walking the catwalk. Celebrities such as models Kendall Jenner and Hailey Baldwin have also taken the initiative with proudly sporting velvet clothing and shoes. Urban Outfitters and Forever 21, major clothing companies familiar to the teenage demographic, have also advertised their velvet clothing lines.

“It’s exciting seeing the new trends every year,” said Christina Li ’17. “I think velvet is very fitting for this year’s fall fashion.”
