With summer rapidly approaching, what better way is there to spend a hot and sunny day than with the most anticipated summer kickoff event of the year? Governors Ball — also known as Gov Ball — is an annual festival in New York for artists and music enthusiasts alike. The name was coined by the founders at its original 2011 location on Governors Island before the event moved to Randall’s Island in 2012 due to renovations. The festival has since been held at Flushing Meadows Corona Park—and this year’s event is set to happen there again soon, from June 5th to 7th, 2026. So get ready, because you are not going to want to miss this!
As a three-day celebration, there are no limits to the offerings at Gov Ball, with each day filled with fun and beautiful chaos. There are passes available for purchase depending on what you are looking for as an attendee. As of April 22nd, 2026, Gov Ball has publicized this year’s festival schedule, so you know exactly how to plan your day to watch all your favorite bands. From watching the performances of headliners to underrated artists, lining up for vendors, or simply enjoying the vibes, you will find that there is always something to do or see.
Maria Savin ’26 attended last year’s Gov Ball for the first time. “It was everything I was expecting and more! It definitely won’t be my last time attending,” Savin said. She noted that while she initially most looked forward to the music, she was surprised by how much the festival offered beyond the performances. “There’s honestly so much more to Gov Ball than just the music,” Savin said. Despite spending ten long hours at the festival, she noted that the energy remained high throughout the day because of the event’s organization and constant activities. She enjoyed exploring a variety of genres, discovering new artists, and experiencing the interactive aspects of the event. Throughout the festival, brands distributed free items ranging from slurpees and coffee to sunscreen, hair ties, and pins.
There are one, two, or even three-day passes available for purchase on their website — including general admission (GA), GA+, VIP, and pit viewing options — and group hospitality experiences such as cabanas or private suites. Gov Ball also partners with GOVX — an e-commerce platform — in order to provide a special discount to military, first responders, medical services, and educators for three-day GA passes. And if you are visiting New York for the festival, you might just be interested in their hotel and festival experience.
Gov Ball 2026 is headlined by Lorde, Baby Keem, Stray Kids, Kali Uchis, A$AP Rocky, and Jennie. The lineup is also joined by many other diverse artists such as KATSEYE, Mariah the Scientist, and Blood Orange. Artists will be performing across three stages: the Verizon stage, the Snapchat stage, and the Grove.
Gov Ball & NYC Culture
Gov Ball is heavily influenced by New York City culture with a lively atmosphere, a multitude of styles worn by attendees, and a wide variety of iconic New York City food vendors. The lineup is also joined by New York City-based student artists like School of Rock Queens and School of Rock New York.
As of May 12th, 2026, Gov Ball released its food and beverage vendor lineup, bringing in many good eats from the local Queens Night Market. From Mao’s Bao steamed buns to the creamy goodness of Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, Gov Ball is a great place to get a taste of New York’s best.
“I believe New York City is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and Gov Ball really reflects that. You see people from all different backgrounds coming together over music, fashion, food, and shared experiences. It feels like a huge celebration of the city’s energy and creativity, and I think it gives both locals and visitors a chance to experience a piece of what makes New York City so special,” Savin said.
What’s new in Gov Ball 2026?
This year’s lineup and experiences mark many unique milestones for the Governors Ball. Most significantly, this is the first year that Gov Ball introduced K-pop headliners, with Stray Kids being the first K-pop group headliner and Jennie being the first headlining K-pop soloist. This is a development from past years, where Gov Ball has previously included aespa—the first K-pop group to ever perform at the event in 2023 — and P1Harmony — the first male K-pop group to ever perform at the event in 2024. The inclusion of K-pop acts as both performers and headliners at Gov Ball sheds light on the historic growth of the industry in the U.S. and how Korean music culture is becoming more prominent.
KATSEYE will also be joining the lineup on Friday, demonstrating their growth as a relatively new global girl group. Having recently performed at Coachella 2026, their inclusion in the Gov Ball lineup marks yet another milestone in their career.
There will also be a new Spotify experience, noted to be similar to Spotify Wrapped. In this experience, you will receive a “Festival Persona” and a personalized playlist.
As a previous hallmark of Gov Ball, the use of wristbands was temporarily phased out in 2025 in exchange for mobile entry —but it is now back in 2026! Tickets and wristbands are expected to be delivered in May 2026, but if you still have not received them by the festival date, you can head over to the box office for assistance on the day of.
First Gov Ball? Here’s what to expect!
As a summer festival with heatwaves, massive crowds, and multiple stages to walk between, it is highly recommended to bring an empty reusable water bottle — which can be refilled at any of Gov Ball’s free, filtered hydration stations — and sunscreen. It is also advised to eat beforehand if you do not plan on buying from vendors, as it can get pricey.
Dress for the weather and prioritize comfort over fashion. Gov Ball is a major trending social event, so most people are excited for this opportunity to dress up and look their best. However, with extreme weather conditions and prolonged periods of standing, it is important to keep these considerations in mind.
Go early. If you are interested in making it to the general section barricade or getting the right size merch, it is worth it to get out your front door early and start lining up for the event. There may be limited parking, so many festivalgoers ultimately decide to take public transportation. The festival will also conduct security checks, where attendees may be subject to full airport-style searches before entry.
To prepare, you might choose to bring a clear backpack, reusable water bottle, portable charger, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and a rain poncho.
Reddit users share that cell reception could sometimes be poor; they recommend that festival attendees set up meeting points in the event you are separated from your friends and cannot contact them. They also add that people should beware of pickpockets, and it is your responsibility to remember to keep your belongings safe.
It should be noted that children 8 and under are able to attend the festival for free with a ticket-holding adult. However, as the population of festivalgoers consists primarily of teenagers and young adults, parents and guardians should be aware of the large crowds, loud music, and potential exposure to alcohol and vaping that could affect their children.
As a previous Gov Ball attendee, Maria Savin shares, “Here’s what to expect: great music, huge crowds, lots of walking, and nonstop energy all day long. I’d definitely recommend wearing comfortable shoes, checking the weather beforehand, and planning out which artists you want to see ahead of time because sets can overlap. Bringing a portable charger is also a lifesaver since your phone battery goes fast when you’re taking videos and trying to navigate the festival all day.”
Savin also advises future attendees to familiarize themselves with the festival layout beforehand, noting that navigating between stages and locating attractions such as the merchandise store could be confusing for first-time visitors. And she encourages attendees to explore performances by unfamiliar artists, explaining that some of her favorite moments came from unexpectedly discovering new music. Additionally, she recommended taking advantage of the free giveaways offered throughout the festival, recalling that one of her favorite souvenirs was a complimentary fanny pack she still frequently uses.
Ready? Set, GOv Ball!
Gov Ball offers more than just a weekend of live music — it serves as a reflection of New York City’s culture, diversity, and evolving music industry. The festival not only brings together people from different backgrounds, but also highlights the growing presence of global genres such as K-pop at large American festivals. For first-time attendees, the festival becomes an opportunity to not only see favorite artists, but also a chance to discover new experiences, connect with fellow music lovers, and see firsthand what dominates and defines the New York music scene.
“I believe New York City is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and Gov Ball really reflects that. You see people from all different backgrounds coming together over music, fashion, food, and shared experiences.
