Opposites Attract Rings True: A Review of ‘The Lovebirds’
Because of the coronavirus pandemic and necessary social distancing requirements in place, many students across the country are struggling to keep themselves busy. Some spend their time creating art, working, or even brainstorming and creating business plans. Regardless of the hobbies and interests that we have, so many of us enjoy kicking back and enjoying a good movie or television show.
The Lovebirds, released on Netflix on May 22, 2020, follows a couple, Leilani and Jibran, as they navigate their relationship and try to solve a murder for which they are believed to be suspects. Issa Rae, who plays Leilani, is well known for her roles in the web-series The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl and the hit HBO series Insecure. Jibran is played by actor Kumail Nanjiani, who is known for his roles on the comedy series Silicon Valley and the film The Big Sick. The Lovebirds is directed by Michael Showalter, who is most known for directing The Big Sick.
A major positive component of the movie is the chemistry between Leilani and Jibran. While immensely different, they both seem to balance each other out and can serve as an example of the proverb ‘opposites attract.’ The connection between Leilani and Jibran would make you want to root for them during the duration of the movie. Also, the movie is a fresh comedy and makes many references to racial identity and pop culture without them feeling awkward or misplaced. The film is also very visually appealing, and the outdoor scenes would make anyone want to book a vacation to New Orleans. While the relationship between Jibran and Leilani is lovable and attractive, the storyline of the movie falls flat. The film also felt a little too short and left me feeling unsatisfied. Instead of the plot being the focal point of the film, it seems to come second to Leilani and Jibran’s relationship. The movie rides on the charm and appeal of its leads and would otherwise be forgettable.
Despite its weak storyline, the strong characters and funny moments in the movie make it lightly enjoyable. If you’re looking for a pleasant movie with loveable leads, The Lovebirds should definitely be on your radar.
