Tashfia Haidar ’19 has been a fan of BlackPink since their debut and she has always admired their success.

With the rise of popularity in Kpop around the world, Blackpink is one of the many groups that definitely stand out. Standing with reputable groups from the past, such as Wonder Girls, 2NE1, and Girls Generation, Blackpink has definitely expanded the horizon of Kpop by bringing it all over the world.

The group is made up of Jennie, Rosé, Lisa, and JiSoo; being composed of four members, their formation of girl groups in Kpop definitely stand out from the rest; when usually most groups have up to seven to twelve members.

However, this was not the case, for the group was to originally be composed of nine members with two units when performing, along with the name Pink Punk, instead of the Blackpink we know today. But YG Entertainment, the company that owns Blackpink, chose to create something new from the lives of these four young women.

“They are such a unique group unlike any other. Unlike previous female K-pop groups, who were either super girly or punk like, Blackpink managed to incorporate both into each and every song, appealing to a wider audience,” said Tashfia Haidar ’19.

Going back to 2011, JiSoo first started out as an MC for Inkigayo. She was the first to audition for YG and ended up passing, officially becoming a YG trainee. Then Jennie came along with her famous Chanel outfit. She’s often known as ‘Human Chanel’ and was planning to originally moved to the United States but when the audition came, she wanted to audition to pursue her dream of becoming a singer and dancer. The next group member was Lisa who was known for dancing leading her to sign up to follow her passion. She was the only applicant to pass the audition out of her whole country Thailand. Rosé would not have been able to join the group if it were not for her father who booked a ticket for her as they lived in a rural area of Australia. She was able to audition and join the group.

Tashfia Haidar’19 has always been interested in the group and knew about them the moment they uploaded their debut songs “Whistle” and “Boombayah.” “They are such a unique group unlike any other. Unlike previous female K-pop groups, who were either super girly or punk like, Blackpink managed to incorporate both into each and every song, appealing to a wider audience.”

Their collaborations with American artist such as Dua Lipa has helped them to raise in popularity and giving them more recognition in different countries. Blackpink has since released four albums and one solo song from Jennie. Additionally, they were the only female K-pop group to be invited to perform at Coachella. With the immediate success that they have had all over the world, this girl group is truly a force to be reckoned with.
