Power Couple Takes Over KDrama Scene
A review of a new Korean drama entitled ‘While You Were Sleeping’
Two of the biggest actors in Korea, Lee Jong Suk and Suzy Bae, are collaborating in a new Korean drama entitled While You Were Sleeping. This unique collaboration has already caused a lot of buzz in Korea as well as among the K-drama enthusiasts at Bronx Science. Many students have been intrigued by both the uniqueness of the drama’s plot and by its cast.
The plot of this drama follows a young woman, Nam Hong Joo (played by Suzy Bae), who has the ability to foresee accidents through her dreams in short visions depicting unfortunate events that end up coming true. A rookie law prosecutor, Jung Jae Chan (played by Lee Jong-Suk), struggles to stop those predictions from becoming real. The two know each other, because Nam Hong Joo used to idolize Jung Jae Chan. Although Jung Jae Chan appears to be emotionless and cold, he shows to be quite foolish in some aspects. Nam Hong-Joo is an unemployed ex-journalist. She used to be Jae Chan’s fan and idolized him. The two clash with their differing personalities, with Jung Jae Chan especially determined to keep Nam Hong Joo’s predictions from coming true. Kristina Tan ’19 said, “The main characters of the drama seem to suit each other well appearance-wise, and hopefully the same goes for their acting and chemistry on screen. From what I have seen from the trailer, the two actors make this a very promising drama.”

Only a few episodes have been aired so far, but the drama has already topped the current charts as the most viewed drama even among its competitors Hospital Ship and Age of Youth 2. The aesthetic quality and cinematography of the first episode attracted many viewers, especially among Bronx Science students. Fabliha Hussain ’18 said, “The first episode was immediately eye catching with scenes that had incredible production from acting to filming.”
Many students have also commented on the unique plot of While You Were Sleeping in comparison to other popular dramas of the past year, such as Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and Strong Woman Do Bong Soon.
“Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon were both on the lighthearted side and had a lot of comedy. This drama does seem to have some aspects of humor, but it seems to be more melodramatic than the other two. However, this drama seems to be more about how both leads work and grow together and fall in love in the process as well,” said Fabliha Hussain.
While You Were Sleeping brings a lot of new and unfamiliar concepts to Korean Drama enthusiasts. Beginning with a thrilling plot line that reels the viewer in, and ending with a romance between two people of different worlds, While You Were Sleeping is currently airing on SBS every Wednesday and Thursday with a total of thirty two planned episodes.
