Makerspace, Bronx Science’s new program which allows students to work on a variety of hand-on projects, welcomes all creative groups among the student body, from artists to engineers. It is the perfect place for students to release their creativity.

The program is unique in that it allows students to freely innovate and access advanced engineering equipment, in order to implement their ideas. “Makerspace is different from other clubs, because the school is providing us with materials for the first time,” said Makerspace President Andrew Ma ‘17. “We now have about ten 3D printers, and we’re going to have more laser cutters.”

“The fact that so many underclassmen are eager to come and learn really inspires me,” said Vice President Sumaiya Mahin ’17. “I like helping them out.”

Makerspace is open to all students, no matter their knowledge or expertise in the STEM. Thus, a lack of formal experience with STEM will not be a barrier to those who are genuinely interested in learning more about building and inventing. Dylan Nagel ’18 said,“I’m hoping to get a more intricate understanding of logic and integrated chips of circuits.”

Just a few minutes into the first meeting, students were already working together to build their own miniature flashlight. Although it was a challenge to build from scratch, with a little help from the board members and their peers, many students were successful.

“The fact that so many underclassmen are eager to come and learn really inspires me,” said Vice President Sumaiya Mahin ’17. “I like helping them out.”

As the year goes on, students will be introduced to a variety of projects, such as creating an Iron Man chest reactor and a Tesla coil. However, they are always welcome to suggest their own ideas and let their imagination run free.
