When AI first came into the picture, there was no clear path as to the legislation that would follow it. Would there be a regulation? Laws? The possibilities were endless. As AI continues to evolve, its influence on humanity, governance, and civilization at large becomes increasingly pervasive.
For individuals, AI brings both promise and uncertainty. On the one hand, it enhances everyday life through personalized recommendations, smart assistants, and improvements in healthcare, education, and transportation. AI systems can detect diseases earlier, automate tedious tasks, and even generate art, music, and literature. However, these advancements come at a cost. As machines grow more capable, many traditional jobs are at risk of automation, raising concerns about widespread unemployment and the need for large-scale retraining efforts. There’s also the challenge of algorithmic bias: AI systems can unintentionally reinforce existing inequalities if they’re trained on biased data, leading to unfair outcomes in hiring, lending, or law enforcement.

In a Harvard Medical School study by Kanaka Rajan, associate professor of neurobiology in the Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School and her team, Rajan explains, “There are several risks involved in the development of AI-powered weapons, but the three biggest we see are: first, how these weapons may make it easier for countries to get involved in conflicts; second, how nonmilitary scientific AI research may be censored or co-opted to support the development of these weapons; and third, how militaries may use AI-powered autonomous technology to reduce or deflect human responsibility in decision-making.”

With the increasing call for government regulation, there is an increasing mistrust of the government, with AI at the forefront. AI is only a neutral technology. Currently, it is still just lines of code that happen to learn quicker than humans. But what makes it so intimidating for most is the sheer mistrust we have in whose hands it could land. But this worry has also happened many times before in history.
There were similar worries when industrial machines just entered factories. The original purpose of these machines was to make livelihoods and human jobs more efficient. While the intent may have been to revolutionize, ultimately, these machines land in factories with investors and owners eager to make as much profit as possible. It brings into question whether we are scared of new technologies, or are we scared of who controls them?
