Jannatul Chowdhury ’19 believes that ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ and ‘Mamma Mia’ are worthy of Oscars.

It is never too early to talk about the possible nominations for the 91st annual Oscars. The awards have become a little predictable to some. As the time for the Oscars slowly comes closer, the predictions seems to be easier to guess. The return of old nominees, such as Meryl Streep, and the fanaticism surrounding new movies such as ‘A Star is Born’ make for some easy selections.

Some movies that have been projected to win are ‘The Hate U Give,’ ‘Black Panther,’ and ‘First Man’ for Best Picture. Many websites such as IMDb, Observer, and IndieWire predict Bradley Cooper from the movie ‘First Born’ and Ryan Gosling from ‘First Man’ to win Best Actor. Directors, story writers, supporting actors, and actresses have also been selected from these movies. Amongst younger fans, support lies with hit blockbuster, ‘Black Panther.’ “’Black Panther’ should definitely win an Oscar,” said junior Subah Patwari ’20. ‘Black Panther’ was recently nominated in the new category ‘The Best Popular Film,’ which fans were not satisfied about. As sources such as Indiewire said, ‘Black Panther’’s fans were disappointed and believed it should have won Best Picture.

“Meryl Streep should definitely win Best Supporting Actress in ‘Mamma Mia,’ and ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ should win for ‘Best Film,’ Jannatul Chowdhury ’19 said.

Then there are others with different opinions. “Meryl Streep should definitely win Best Supporting Actress in ‘Mamma Mia,’ and ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ should win for ‘Best Film,’ Jannatul Chowdhury ’19 said. Meryl Streep has been nominated for twenty-one Oscars and has won three times. Year after year, she continues to amaze audiences. There are some people mentioning numerous other categories, and movies like ‘Infinity War’ and ‘A Quiet Place.’ IMDb has a list updated monthly on the new Oscar Nominees, and many of the predictions match those of students at Bronx Science. “’Infinity War’ is a great ‘Avengers’ movie, but it doesn’t give us the wow factor an Oscar deserves,” said Moitrayee Dasgupta ’19.

Even though the Oscars are a couple of weeks away, the film industry cannot be recognized enough for its achievements. Now fans just need to control their anticipation until February 24th, 2019, to see if their predictions are true or not. Only time will tell. For now, it is time to hit the theatres!
